Motorcycles and Service Vehicles

Motorcycle/moped parking has been designated in various areas of the campus. Parking in these areas is limited to motorcycles and mopeds displaying a valid registration decal. Also, these vehicles must be parked in the areas set aside for them. Motorcycles and mopeds parked in undesignated areas are subject to the same penalties as regular motor vehicles. Motorcycles/mopeds are prohibited from parking in spaces set aside for cars/trucks and are limited to designated motorcycle spaces only. Periodic assessments will be conducted to determine requirement for additional motorcycle parking spaces.

Service Vehicle spaces: Parking in these areas/spaces is limited to official motor vehicles of the Institute, or to private vehicles properly displaying a valid registration decal and an Official Business permit. Service Vehicle spaces are reserved at all times.

Motorcycle and Motorbike Safety:

Motorcycle, Motorbike, Minibike, Moped, and Scooter Safety Concerns for the environment and fluctuating fuels costs are attracting growing numbers of Georgia Tech's community to switch to alternative modes of transportation. There are many options: motorcycles, motorbikes, minibikes, mopeds, scooters, and bicycles. All of these vehicles involve safety concerns and a few have legal requirements Georgia Tech wants owners to be aware of.

Examples of AUTHORIZED Motorcycle Parking:

Motorcycle Licensing and Insurance

Please make sure you are properly licensed and trained if you ride a motorcycle in Georgia . According to the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS), State law requires a Class M motorcycle license for motorcycles, a classification which also includes motorbikes, minibikes, scooters, and mopeds with engine sizes of 51CC or greater. Obtaining a Class M license does require applicants to be at least 18 years of age and to successfully complete a motorcycle driving test and special road rules and signs tests.

The Georgia DDS offers courses in motorcycle skills training and refresher courses regarding basic cycle safety in order to insure operators are well-equipped for the dangers of the road.

Georgia law requires motorcyclists to carry liability insurance of at least $25,000 for bodily injury and $50,000 for property damage.

For more details, please visit the DDS website at http://www.dds.ga.gov/ . Specific information regarding Georgia Class M and moped requirements may be found at http://www.dds.ga.gov/drivers/DLdata.aspx?con=1749319514&ty=dl .

Georgia Helmet Laws

Georgia law restricts anyone from operating or riding a motorcycle without protective headgear which complies with the standards established by the commissioner of motor vehicle safety. (Additionally, protective eye wear is required by law unless the vehicle is equipped with a windscreen.) The use of a helmet can prevent partial or total disability due to brain and/or spinal injuries and save hundreds of millions of dollars per year in lost wages, productivity, and medical expenses.

Registering and Parking Motorized Vehicles on the Georgia Tech Campus

Parking and Transportation is interested not only in helping you stay safe and in compliance with Georgia law, but supports safety initiatives for all members of the Georgia Tech community by providing adequate and easily accessible motorcycle parking spaces throughout campus. Henceforth, all motorized vehicle parking will be limited to designated areas only. Parking on Institute sidewalks, walkways, in building entrances and breezeways is prohibited. All vehicles require a parking permit.

In order to register your motorized vehicle and obtain a permit, please stop by Parking and Transportation at your earliest convenience. Motorcycles (which include motorbikes, minibikes, scooters, or mopeds with engine sizes of 51CC or greater) may be permitted until July 31, 2009, at the appropriate pro-rated rate effective the date of registration. Motorized vehicles with engine sizes of 50CC or less may be registered free-of-charge through July 31, 2009. Please provide a document of ownership (i.e, bill of sale, vehicle registration, or insurance card) and an identification card to complete this process. Payment methods include cash, check, or charge (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express).

The Department of Parking and Transportation is only a few minutes away from any point on campus. Visit the office at 828 West Peachtree Street , across from the College of Management . Take the Trolley to Technology Square from main campus or drive and park in Parking Area 6, immediately outside the front office door.

Protect yourself and your motorized vehicle from needless liability. If your vehicle meets the requirements, register it with the State, obtain insurance, and please don't forget your helmet!
